The African R’n’B princess, Nneka, who is compared to Alicia Keys and Erykah Badu, will perform on 13 January at 8 p.m. in the magical atmosphere of the Novi Sad Synagogue! We will find out what it looks like when the music and fashion icon from Nigeria paints the Synagogue with the power of the voice that placed her on the European charts for 50 artists on the rise.

Video works by Novi Sad artist Dejan Stojkov will be projected on the walls of the Synagogue with a performance by Nneka.

Nneka was born and raised in Warri, Delta State of Nigeria. At the age of 19, she moved to Germany and enrolled at the University of Hamburg to study anthropology. While she was a student, Nneka mastered her craft as a singer-songwriter and her musical career was born. Following the footsteps of legendary artists such as Fela Kuti and Bob Marley, Nneka drew a lot of influence and inspiration from her experiences and carved an authentic voice with a message in her music. Her politically inspired lyrics pushed her to the forefront as one of Africa’s powerful voices. Nneka’s lyrics reveal a variety of everyday life issues that range from heartbreak, disdain for gossip, motherly love, and the quest for justice.

Nneka strives to convey positive energy to any environment she can reach:

‘If you approach me with hatred, I will approach you with love. I must be strong enough to transform that hate into love. And the more you hate me, the more I will love you.’

Nneka has released multiple albums so far: ‘Victim of Truth’ in 2005, ‘No Longer at Ease’ in 2008, ‘Concrete Jungle’ for the North American market in 2010 and ‘Soul Is Heavy’ in 2011. The single ‘Heartbeat’ from 2009, from the ‘No Longer at Ease’ album scored Nneka a UK Top 20 hit and was subsequently sampled by Rita Ora for her #1 UK hit ‘R.I.P’. Nneka continues to tour and electrify audiences across the globe, touring with The Roots, Gnarls Barkley, Nas and Damian Marley.

Nneka was nominated for awards in numerous categories worldwide and won the MOBO Award for Best African Act in 2009 in the UK. In 2010, she recorded a tribute song called ‘Viva Africa’ for the 2010 FIFA WORLD CUP in South Africa and was a guest on The David Letterman Show. In 2012, she appeared on BET’s ‘106 & PARK – Music Matters’ when she performed a live acoustic set. In 2013, she played in New York’s legendary Apollo Theatre. In 2014, Nneka joined the judging panel on ‘Nigerian Idol’ Season 4.

She released her first independent album ‘My Fairy Tales on 2 March 2015. ‘My Fairy Tales’ is a concept album exploring the African people’s lives and struggles. This album evokes the positive aspects of the relationship, the sense of responsibility towards children, and the importance of culture, education and identity values.

‘My travels and time spent in France have influenced me while writing these songs. The album does not focus only on the suffering of Africans, but on endurance, perseverance and gratitude that are common to all peoples around the world.’
