By the decision of Mayor Milan Đurić, the City of Novi Sad will not be organizing New Year’s Eve celebrations, nor the celebration of the Serbian New Year. This decision was made out of respect for the victims of the tragic accident at the Novi Sad Railway Station, which resulted in the deaths of 14 people and left three others seriously injured.
The tragedy deeply shook the entire city of Novi Sad and all of Serbia. ’I am convinced that I share the sentiment of all the citizens of Novi Sad, believing that it is necessary at this moment to stand by those affected by this tragedy and their families. Out of respect for the victims and in recognition of the pain and suffering of their families, it is important to forgo large celebrations this year and to be united in grief, sadness, compassion, and solidarity,’ said Mayor Đurić.
The mayor emphasized that the most important priority now is for the city administration of Novi Sad to focus all its attention on providing support and assistance to the families of those who tragically lost their lives and those who were injured.
’The City of Novi Sad will do everything in its power to provide all the necessary help and support to the families of the victims and the injured. It is our responsibility and moral duty to ensure that no one is left without support in this difficult time, and those responsible for this tragic event will bear full criminal responsibility in accordance with the law,’ Mayor Đurić concluded.
