One of the greatest contemporary jazz pianists, Tigran Hamasyan from Armenia, is coming to the European Capital of Culture on 13 January at 9 p.m. to Doček 7531! The new and first in the history of Novi Sad, City Concert Hall will shine like never before at the performance of the prestigious European Echo Jazz Award winner at an event not to be missed!
Tigran Hamasyan was born in Gyumri, Armenia, in 1987. When he was just a toddler, Tigran gravitated to tape players and the piano instead of regular childhood toys, and by the time he was 3, he was working his way through figuring out songs on the piano by the Beatles, Louis Armstrong, Led Zeppelin, Deep Purple, Black Sabbath and Queen. At the age of 7, he entered the world of jazz. He studied jazz tunes and improvised on the piano. He studied the art of Duke Ellington, Thelonious Monk, Charlie Parker, Art Tatum, Miles Davis, and Bud Powell, among others. At the same time, he composed his first works.
He performed at the First International Jazz Festival in Yerevan in 1998, which opened up other performance opportunities. His participation was a real revelation in the jazz community, as he received numerous invitations to play in concerts and sessions. The second Jazz Festival in Yerevan held in 2000 was more fruitful for the young musician. He met Chick Corea, Avishai Cohen, Jeff Ballard and Ari Roland there.
It was there that he met Stephane Kochoyan, who played a key role in the presentation and promotion of Tigran in the European jazz community. In 2001, he invited Tigran to participate in several festivals in France, where he played with Philippe and Christophe Le Van.
The young musician met top-notch jazz stars such as Wayne Shorter, Herbie Hancock, John McLaughlin, Joe Zawinul, Danilo Pérez and John Patitucci, among others. He also played with Pierre Michelot & Daniel Humair. Tigran was highly regarded by jazz authorities.
Then followed a period of extensive study of contemporary jazz and Armenian folk music which later helped him achieve higher levels. In 2006, Tigran won second place in the Martial Solal International Jazz Competition in Paris.
From 25 to 27 April, Tigran participated in the competition Jazz a Juan Revelations 2003 and won the first prize in the Jazz Instrumental category. Tigran won the 1st prize and the public prize at the Montreux Jazz Solo Piano Competition held in 2003.
In the period 2003-2004, he took part in many festivals and concerts around the world. Several CDs were recorded.
In March 2005, he participated in the First Moscow International Jazz Pianist Competition and won the third prize. In June, he won the first prize at the 8th Monaco Jazz Soloist Competition.
A new CD was recorded in Los Angeles with Ben Wendel (saxophone), Francois Moutin (bass), Ari Hoenig (drums) and Ruben Hakhverdyan (duduk, zurna), which was released in 2006 by Nocturne Records (Paris).
On 17 September 2006, Tigran won first prize at the Thelonious Monk Jazz competition.
He studied music at the University of Southern California in Los Angeles.
