The Suburbium of the Petrovaradin Fortress is the lighthouse of culture on the Danube.

It represents the gem of baroque architecture of Novi Sad, and it is one of the largest European fortifications built during the 17th and 18th centuries. The cornerstone of today’s Petrovaradin Fortress was set in 1692. The Petrovaradin clock tower, which shows what centuries have brought with its reversed hour hands, bears witness to its turbulent history, legends about the Fortress and Suburbium, and underground military galleries. A small town built next to an almost impregnable fortress became a city. Recently, it also became one of the cultural centres of Novi Sad. Forts and barracks are home to the Museum of the City of Novi Sad and the Academy of Arts, ateliers and galleries, while walls and sconces are the stages for the famous music festival in Europe.

The European Capital of Culture title contributed to the renewal, and Suburbium, the so-called Gibraltar on the Danube, displayed its glory again after 300 years. On New Year’s Eve 2021, the Suburbium became a synonym for Doček (the two celebrations of New Year’s Eve) in Novi Sad. Artists and visitors to cultural events will certainly consider it a city of books, or more precisely, associate it with the Suburbium manifestation, which in the future will be organised during summer as part of the Kaleidoscope of Culture project.

Combining visual and performing arts, local artists and artists from all over the world will give us unforgettable experiences on 31 December in the Suburbium of the Petrovaradin Fortress. We can expect the famous British trio Kosheen, followed by the winners of the BRIT Award – the group Stereo MC’s, a favourite of Berlin clubs, DJ Biesmans, one of the biggest and most popular vocal groups in the world – Perpetuum Jazzile, as well as famous local alternative bands Repetitor, Obojeni Program, Monohrom, and others.

In addition to exciting musical performances, the Tesla Light Gallery will mark Doček celebrated on 31 December. Through the play of light, movement and sounds of interactive audio-visual artistic interventions, the Tesla Light Gallery will give the baroque jewel of Novi Sad, Suburbium, a completely new ambiance. The Tesla Light Gallery will include works by Goran Despotovski, a representative of the Association of Fine Artists of Vojvodina (SULUV) and artists Dejan Stojkov and Anđelko Popić and others.
