The City Museum of Novi Sad

The City Museum of Novi Sad at the Petrovaradin Fortress, as well as its branches – the Foreign Art Collection in Dunavska Street and the Homeland Collection in Sremski Karlovci, thanks to its permanent installations, is a favourite destination of many residents of Novi Sad, as well as tourists.

The City Museum of Novi Sad was founded in 1954 and belongs to the category of city museums of a complex type, whose activities include the development of the city from its inception to modern times.

The central building of the Museum is located on the upper plateau of the Petrovaradin Fortress, in a building known as Topovnjača or Mamulinska barracks, which was built in 1775 as a one-story military barracks.

On the ground floor of the building there is a permanent setting the Petrovaradin Fortress in the Past, which shows the continuity of settlements and military fortifications in this location, from prehistory to World War I.

On the first floor is the Study Exhibition of the Department of Cultural History, where the civil life of Novi Sad from the middle of the 18th century to the second half of the 20th century is presented. In addition to stylish furniture and objects of applied art, works by famous artists – Sava Šumanović, Đorđe Jovanović, Boško Petrović, Milenko Šerban and others can be seen at the exhibition.

One of the biggest attractions of the Petrovaradin Fortress, the underground military gallery, is available for visiting, with the museum expert guidance. The underground military galleries represent a communication system on four floors, built in steps with various corridors and rooms of different purposes and dimensions, loopholes and skylights.

For the first time, the life and importance of Mileva Marić Einstein will be presented to the international audience with a significant interactive multimedia exhibition ‘Mileva: We Are One Rock’ at the City Museum of Novi Sad. The museum located on the Petrovaradin rock that looks over Novi Sad will re-examine the symbolism of the surname Einstein (one rock) through an exhibition inspired by Mileva’s brilliant mind and shown through the artistic prism of author Dušan Jovović, PhD.
